Speaker G Karthikeyan on Wednesday said that Prof S Guptan Nair, who had played a major role in various literary fields, made his presence felt in the rich culture of Kerala.

Inaugurating the Prof S Guptan Nair commemoration meeting and distribution of awards organised by Prof S Guptan Nair Foundation, Karthikeyan said that Guptan Nair was very soft in his life and it was reflected in his works also.

His presence was seen in literary criticism, essays, discourse, drama and journalism.

“He was also very much interested in sports and music. As a teacher, he had become the real ‘Guru’ of thousands of students,” he said. Guptan Nair can be termed as the real cultural leader. He had never reacted to any of the issues without studying it or ignored the issues which were not relevant.

His suave behaviour was reflected in his speech and creations. His arguments were strongly presented in the writings, Karthikeyan said.

Guptan Nair was not ready for creating controversies. But, his literary criticisms were very genuine and this was seen in the criticism against Basheer, Changampuzha and Kumaranashan. He was a person who wrote less and read more. This was be reflected in all his speeches and a collection of his speeches are being brought out as a book, as it would be a treasure for the cultural field.
