The Archaeology Department has started putting up railings around the Fort walls as part of a project to protect the heritage structure.
The railings have come up on the inner part of the Fort at its northern end.
Archaeology officials said that the conservation works will be undertaken in areas where the Fort is threatened the most.
‘’We have already completed the work on the Vettimurichcha Kotta and the East Fort gates. The idea is to take up work on as much area as possible on the old structure,’’ State Archaeology Director Premkumar said.
The area where the Department has now put up the railings had deteriorated into a garbage dump after the Kudumbashree units stopped collecting waste. On Thursday also, mounds of trash could be seen next to the brand new railing. The Archaeology Department had designed a Rs 1 crore-project to protect the Fort walls and gates in 2011, after it was found that parts of the structure were crumbling owing to neglect.
The Vettimurichcha Kotta had been in a bad condition with vehicles passing through the narrow gate regularly scraping on the gate posts. As part of the conservation work, the Department has now erected protective railings around the gate posts of the Fort, especially at Pazhavangadi.
