The Students Federation of India (SFI) has demanded a probe into the irregularities in allotting five new colleges under Calicut University. SFI state president Shiju Khan and secretary T P Bineesh said that out of the 49 colleges allotted by the University, 46 were given permission violating the norms.

The University’s guidelines say that at least 15 acres of land is needed to start a new college and this was violated, they said.“When this irregularity came into the notice of the Governor, it was rejected and now permission has been given again on the basis of an order of UGC. For starting a college, the management should have land, building and complete possession.”

Permission was given to some managements which do not have their own land and have leased land. When this was found by the University, the applications were sent back. Later, the syndicate meeting held on May 16 decided not to consider the findings of the University regarding the ownership of land, they said.

“Earlier, a Vigilance inquiry was ordered against the VC when the University decided to give its land to private parties for other purposes. Another Vigilance inquiry has been ordered against the VC in connection with the affiliation given to Eranad Knowledge City under the Al-Hind Educational and Charitable Trust. When approval was given to 39 colleges, 38 were self-financing and 28 of them were directly under control of IUML.”

They alleged Muslim League was involving in all matters of the University.
