Former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s foresight and vision laid the foundation for the progress of the nation, Speaker G Karthikeyan said on Monday.

That fact that the country has been able to move forward in the industrial and education sectors is ample testimony to his vision, Karthikeyan said, addressing a function organised on the Assembly premises to mark the death anniversary of the former Prime Minister.

The relevance of Nehru’s vision gains in importance as time progresses, he said. At another commemoration organised by the District Congress Committee, writer George Onakkoor said that conflicts are being created worldwide owing to the absence of rulers who lack a sense of history and a concern for the future of mankind. Nehru was a politician who was able to forge unity among the people riven by ancient cultural differences.

He was a statesman who, while respecting the different religions and customs, did not bow to the pressures of religious and casteist pressures. He was also an artist who could appreciate the music of M S Subbulakshmi and the cartoons of Shankar.

Congress leader Thalekkunnil Basheer, who inaugurated the meeting, said that the corruption and communalism were the twin banes of contemporary India. DCC president K Mohan Kumar presided over the function.
