Coir Minister Adoor Prakash has said that the government has initiated the process for setting up an International Centre for Exhibition and Sale of Coir in Alappuzha district. The Centre would be set up on the model of Nedumbassery Airport and a company for this will be formed at the earliest, he said.
“Coir secretary Rani George has been appointed as special officer for setting up the Centre. The process of preparing the project is on,” he said while briefing reporters her on Thursday on the achievements of his ministry on the second anniversary of the UDF Govt.
Adoor Prakash said that the factory for manufacturing modern coir making machines would be inaugurated soon at Alappuzha. “All the work has been completed and it will be opened during the second anniversary celebration time itself,” he said. There is also a proposal to build a factory complex at Enadimangalam Industrial Park under the Coir Corporation at a cost of Rs 40 crore, the Minister said.
Among the achievements of his ministry, Prakash said the wages of the workers in the coir sector had been enhanced to Rs 260 whereas it was Rs 150 under the tenure of the previous govt. He also said that ‘Coir Kerala 2013’ was a great success, which had helped in strengthening the international and domestic markets.
