Organic Bazaar, the organic outlet here is celebrating its 10th anniversary on November 6 at the YMCA Hall. Eminent personalities from various walks of life would grace the function that would be held from 10 am to 12.30 pm. Thanal, the voluntary organisation, which has been in the forefront for fighting pesticides and promoting organic farming, started the Organic Bazaar, as a social enterprise, to bring together farmers and consumers genuinely interested in organic products.

Its first outlet was started as a once-in-a-month bazaar in November 2003 at the Sugathan Memorial Hall.

Over the past 10 years, the bazaar has grown into an outlet that operates on all working days from Thanal’s office at Jawahar Nagar.

From a humble beginning with just three groups of small/marginal farmers and around 20 consumers, the organic bazaar has grown to support more than 200 farmers/producers and has a consumer base of 500 families.

As part of the 10th anniversary celebrations, a year-long campaign named ‘Know Your Food’ would be launched on the day by former Minister for Agriculture Mullakara Ratnakaran in the presence of Sugathakumari, Madhupal and V S Vijayan.

A special organic products mela would be held from November 6 to 9 at the YMCA Hall here. The bazaar will be on from 10.30 am to 7.30 pm. In connection with the celebrations, an essay writing competition for high school students of T’Puram district was held on the topic ‘Organic Farming for Nation’s Reconstruction’.

The prizes will be distributed during the anniversary celebrations. Contact Sangeetha, Development Coordinator, Ph: 9633965808.
