With the summer holidays finally upon them, children are pondering over what best to do during their new found freedom in the next two months. And sports organisations in the city have come forward offering them summer camps in cricket, football and many other games.

A handful of summer coaching camps will be held in and around the city over the summer months, but one that the Zeeros Cricket Club offers is a bit different. This could be for the first time a club will be imparting such extensive array of playing and technical knowledge to children during a short-term camp, that too to be given by some of the big names in Kerala cricket.

The Zeeros, a team formed in 1983 drawing inspiration from Kapil’s Devils’ world cup triumph that year, will avail the services of former Kerala captains K N Ananthapadmanabhan, Sony Cheruvathur and V A Jagadeesh among others to give lessons to budding cricketers of under-16 age category in the 45-day camp starting at their new indoor facility at Konchiravila near Manacaud on April 12.

“We were unable to conduct a coaching camp for around 20 years owing to various reasons. But when we decided to resume the programme, we knew we had to do it differently,” says V R Rajan, president of Zeeros.

Cheruvathur will be heading the camp and he will be assisted by R S Saranya, a former Kerala woman cricketer of the year and currently playing for Karnataka state team. Meanwhile, Ananthapadmanabhan and Jagadeesh will give bowling and batting tips during the course. The physical training of the campers will be handled by Sunandh T S Raj. n  See also P3
