THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : Dr Padmanabhan Palpu was one of the prominent social reformers who worked for the reformation of the social structure during the pre-Independence period, Governor P Sathasivam has said.

He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the 151st birth anniversary celebrations of Dr Palpu organised by Dr P Palpu Foundation at the VJT Hall here on Sunday evening.

“Palpu was born at a time period when the backward communities were facing ill-treatment.

He fought against this and secured a graduation in Medical Science. He was perhaps one of the prominent socio-political activist during that time period,” the Governor said.

At the function, the Governor presented the Dr Palpu Memorial Award, comprising a purse of Rs 50,000, a citation and a plaque to KPCC president V M Sudheeran. Receiving the award, Sudheeran thanked the award jury and Dr Palpu Foundation. He donated the cash prize to Gandhi Bhavan trust of Pathanapuram.  

In the presidential address, Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash promised that he would take the initiative to make a memorial for Dr Palpu. Former civic mayor of Newham Dr Omana Gangadharan, State Institute of Languages director M R Thampan and organising committee chairman T Sharathchandra Prasad were present.
