THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The Student Police Cadet (SPC) project of the state police will be introduced in all tribal model residential schools in the state this year.

The programme in 18 model residential schools (MRSs) and three other tribal schools affiliated to the CBSE will have a different schedule considering the socio-economic and academic standards of the students.

“A special course module is being prepared in consultation with various stakeholders. It’s challenging, but we hope the programme will improve the students’ academic and physical standards,’’ said Student Police Cadet  nodal officer DIG P Vijayan.

Skill development programmes in association with the Additional Skills Acquisition Programme (ASAP) of the Education Department would also be part of the programme.

The other components include ICT, programmes for the development of language and personality.

A state-level workshop will be held this month to finalise the course module. It will have the participation of teachers, social workers and organisations involved in tribal development activities.

The SPC also conducted a survey in the schools to know the requirements and expectations of the students and teachers.

Vijayan said a highlight of the project would be programmes for the parents. ‘’The social and educational standards of the community are poor and we plan to propagate the basics of  ‘scientific parenting’ among the community members,’’ Vijayan said.

An official of the Education Department would be made the nodal officer of the tribal intervention programme.
