THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The squash court complex, which has come up near Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium as part of the 35th National Games, is all set to entice squash buffs. The complex, first of its kind in the public sector, has been built by the National Games Secretariat at a cost of Rs 5.50 crore conforming to international standards.

The National Games Organising Committee hopes of bringing Dipika Pallickal, who showed her brilliance in the recent Asian Games at Incheon, to inaugurate the squash complex.

It has to be noted that the all existing squash courts in the state belong to either social clubs or to affluent individuals, including NRIs, thereby limiting their access to a select few.

The new court project initiated by the state government will play a key role in moulding the careers of many upcoming enthusiasts, including school and college students who were so far deprived of adequate professional training facilities, the organisers believe.

The two-storeyed squash courts complex here has three single courts and a doubles court, besides facilities like a media centre and officials’ rooms.

The courts come in high-quality maple wood flooring borders and service boxes made with a particularly hard plastering wall that enables proper bouncing of the balls.
