100 Days to Go for Start of 35th National Games

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : As the curtains on the 35th National Games is set to go up on January 31, 2015, Kerala Govt is doing an all-round infrastructure development in seven venue districts. 

With just 100 days to go, some of the new stadia are ready, some of the existing ones are renovated while construction work is progressing in others.

 The following are the venues which have been completed or have been renovated

1 Aquatics Complex, Thiruvananthapuram

The Aquatics complex, owned by Kerala State Sports Council, at Pirappancode has been renovated at a cost of Rs 6.4 crore.

2 Squash Court, Thiruvananthapuram

A squash court, the first-ever to be owned by the State Government, has been completed in one-and-a-half years at a cost of Rs 5.5 crore near the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium.

3 Sreepadam Stadium, Attingal

The National Games Secretariat has built Sreepadam stadium in Attingal at Rs 7.18 crore. Kho-Kho and kabaddi matches will be held here.

4 Jimmy George Indoor Stadium, T’Puram

The renovation work of the Jimmy George Indoor Stadium, located at the KWA complex, Vellayambalam, has been completed at Rs 11.6 crore. Owned by the Directorate of Sports, Kerala, the stadium will host gymnastics and handball events.

5 Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Ernakulam

Rajiv Gandhi Indoor stadium, Kadavanthra, has been renovated at a cost of Rs 10.23 crore.

Table tennis and shuttle badminton matches will be conducted here. The stadium is managed by Regional Sport Centre.

6 Thriprayar Indoor Stadium, Thrissur

The indoor Stadium, owned by the Thriprayar Sports and Games Association, Thrissur, has been renovated at Rs 1.08 crore. Boxing events are scheduled at this stadium

7 VKN Menon Indoor Stadium, Thrissur

The construction of a three-storey building  and renovation of VKN Menon indoor stadium, Thrissur, has been completed at Rs. 7.36 crore. Weightlifting and judo competitions will be held here

8 VKK Menon Indoor Stadium, Kozhikode

VKK Menon Indoor stadium has been renovated at a cost of Rs 6.53 crore. The Stadium owned by the District Sports Council, Kozhikode, will host the volleyball matches.

9 Agriculture College Indoor Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram

The indoor stadium in the College of Agriculture, Vellayani, in Thiruvananthapuram, has been renovated at Rs 2.76 crore by Kerala State Construction Corporation.

 It will host Taekwondo and Netball competitions of the games.

10 Lal Bahadur  Shastri Corporation Stadium, Kollam

The renovation work of Lal Bahadur Shastri Corporation Stadium in Kollam has been completed at Rs 6.89 Crores. It will host Rugby Sevens matches

11 Indoor Stadium,

Kannur

The work on the indoor stadium at Mundayad, Kerala’s biggest indoor Stadium, has been competed at a cost of Rs 30 crore. Wrestling and basketball events will be held here.

12 CIAL Golf Course, Ernakulam

A new lawn ball court has been built at Rs 1.08 crore at CIAL Golf Course in the Golf and Country Club, Ernakulam.

13  University Stadium

University Stadium, owned by the Kerala University, has been renovated at Rs 10 crore, to hold athletic events. The stadium is now floodlit.

14 Corporation Stadium, Thrissur

Renovation work on the Corporation Stadium also known as Palace Stadium, under the Thrissur Corporation, at a cost of Rs 10 crore, is being completed. Women’s football matches are scheduled here.

15 Shooting Range, Vattiyoorkavu

A new shooting range, which will have equipment imported from Switzerland, is coming up at Central Polytechnic Campus, Vattiyoorkavu. The budget is Rs 20 crore.

Rifle and pistol shooting events of the 35th National Games are scheduled to be held here.

16 Medical College Ground, Kozhikode

A new stadium constructed at Rs 15 crore and a new synthetic athletic track has been completed at the Medical College Ground, of Kozhikode Medical College. It is to host the men’s football competition.

17 Corporation Stadium, Kozhikode

The National Games Secretariat is renovating the Corporation Stadium also known as EMS Stadium at Rs 21 crore. Men’s football matches of the Games will be held here.

18 Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram

Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium, owned by Kerala Police Sports and Youth Welfare Society, at Palayam, will be the practice ground for athletes. It will be flood-lit. A sum of Rs 8 crore will be spent on renovation the stadium, which is where National Games Secretariat is located.

Venues Where Work is Progressing

1 The Greenfield Stadium, Kariavattom

The Greenfield Stadium, Karyavattom, in T’Puram will host the opening and closing ceremonies. The stadium also has facilities to host events like basketball, table tennis, squash, badminton and swimming. It is the first stadium in India that is being built on Public-Private-Partnership Model by the National Games Secretariat and IL&FS, a construction company. The stadium is being constructed to conform with international standards in football and cricket matches prescribed by FIFA and ICC respectively.

2 Tennis Complex, Thiruvananthapuram

A new tennis complex at Kumarapuram is being constructed by National Games Secretariat. The cost is Rs 2.64 crore.

3 LNCPE, Velodrome, Thiruvananthapuram

Lekshmibai National College for Physical Education owned by Sports Authority of India (SAI) at Karyavattom, is being renovated at Rs 1.39 crore. A sum of Rs 44 lakh has been advanced by the NGS.

3 Trap and Skeet Range, Thrissur

A new trap and skeet range is being constructed by NGS at Police Academy, Ramavarmapuram, at a cost of Rs 5 crore.

4 Hockey Stadium, Kollam

The new hockey stadium owned by SAI, at Ashramam, is being constructed by NGS at Rs 17.55 crore. It is the first hockey stadium in the state with synthetic astroturf.
