THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A reported move to scrap two international awards from the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) has invited the wrath of movie buffs and young filmmakers in the state.

According to sources, the Adoor Gopalakrishnan panel set up by the government to suggest modifications to the IFFK and state film awards, has proposed to strike off some awards from the IFFK. The move has already invited criticisms from various corners. Noted filmmaker and national award winner Dr Biju came out strongly against the move terming it a narrow-minded approach.

“It is learnt that a decision has been taken to stop giving FIPRESCI and NETPAC awards. It is to be noted that young filmmakers who secure these awards gain greater credibility at the international level. Why should such a decision be taken?

These awards are in a way, invitations to other international film festivals. These awards do not have any cash associated with them; only certificates are given. However there’s great artistic value associated with such recognitions. The fact that the awardees are chosen by an international jury adds to its value. FIRESCI and NETPAC awards are given at all major festivals,” Dr Biju added.

It has been pointed out that these awards are a great morale-booster for young filmmakers in the state. From 2007 onwards most of the awardees are youngsters. Film which won these awards include Ore Kadal by Syamaprasad (2007), Adayalangal by M G Sasi and Manjadikuru by Anjali Menon (2008), Kerala Cafe, Patham nilayile Theevandi (2009), Veettilekkula Vazhi and Makara Manju (2010), Adaminte Makan Abu by Salim Ahmed (2011), Ithramathram (2012) and Kanyaka Talkees by K R Manoj and Crime No 89 by Sudevan (2013).

“These awards add to the credibility of these filmmakers. This further prepares them to make international movies.

Why should the academy go for withdrawing these awards? Is it part of an attempt to de-motivate youngsters coming to the field,” asks Dr Biju. The Facebook post by Dr Biju in this regard has already initiated hot discussions in the social media with many coming out against such a move.

‘No Final Decision’

Meanwhile, State Chalachithra Academy chairman Rajeevnath said that a final decision on these proposals are yet to be made.

Speaking to ‘Express’, he said the academy would discuss these proposals in the next governing council meet.

“It was just a recommendation by the Adoor panel in the detailed report that they submitted before the government last month. I have started checking the documents regarding this. KSCA has not yet discussed the matter since the general council has not yet been convened.

The academy general council will convene by next Wednesday,” said Rajeevnath.
