THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The advocates in the district boycotted all courts in the district on Monday, the date on which the agitation seeking a Bench of the High Court in the state capital, was launched seven years ago.

The advocates under the banner of the Trivandrum Bar Association boycotted the courts in Thiruvananthapuram, Neyyattinkara, Kattakada, Nedumangad, Attingal and Varkala.

The advocates and the clerks also staged a dharna in front of the Secretariat. The Action Council said that it would continue the agitation in the coming days. As part of the agitation, they also submitted memorandum to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan.

The agitation had over the past years witnessed wide protest by advocates and people’s representatives. A relay hunger strike was held by lawyers and various marches were held to the Secretariat, High Court and Raj Bhavan.

The issue was even raised in Parliament through a private member’s bill.

However, the agitation slowed down after a committee was constituted to study the demand for setting up the HC Bench in the capital city.
