The artist, Sajeev Kongorpilly, has let his exquisite paintings speak for themselves at his latest exhibition, ‘Varadhakshina’, which concluded at the Durbal Hall, Kochi on Friday. The 26 paintings, which took two and a half years to finish, consists of six oil paintings, two pictures done with pen and ink while the rest are acrylic. “I have not given any captions. The paintings can speak to any common man,” said Sajeev.

One of the eye catchers is ‘Sallapam’ which depicts a romantic conversation between a man and a woman. Sajeev has merged the eyes of the woman and a horse in order to show their relationship in a very beautiful yet subtle manner. The acrylic painting stands out with its colours and the black and white finish given to the bodies.

In another work, the artist has tried to incorporate the modern times and the beauty and popularity of yoga in Kerala. He had done it by merging two bodies in one head and the legs of the woman grows into coconut trees.

Many of the pictures are three-dimensional ones. But there is one done in a geometric manner. It is portrayed only through various geometric shapes. One of the paintings, ‘Kadinte Saundaryam’, is about the beauty of the nature and forests and its beings. Its bright acrylic colours does justice to the theme. It also shows a man hidden behind. The idea is to show how humans intrude in the the harmonious way nature handles itself.“I have not used pencils and such to draw outlines, everything is done freehand,” said the talented artist. “I have always loved art from my childhood.”

Sajeev attended the Chitrapeedam School of Arts, Perumbavoor. Later, he received a National Diploma in Fine Arts from the RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Tripunithura. Today, he is a freelance artist who specialises in oil, acrylic, water colours as well as knife work and mural painting.

When asked about his favourite paintings, he says, “I value each and every painting,” he says. “They are all my favourties.”
