THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: To ensure road safety, State Police Chief T P Senkumar on Wednesday issued guidelines to overcome the flaws in controlling traffic by the police and reduce the rate of road accidents.
The DGP stressed the need of vehicles on four-lane roads strictly adhereing to the line rules. “It has come to the fore that many vehicles were seen moving on the right side of the one way road near the medians of four-lane roads.
Following this, more vehicles are overtaking through left side which, in turn, causes many accidents. Hence the officials should keep a check on the violations and should install the sign board ‘Keep left’ on Medians in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Telugu with the nod from National Highway authorities and Road Fund Board,” the DGP said.
In a statement, the DGP pointed out that the officials deployed at the traffic islands should give appropriate instructions to the drivers of the vehicles in following the rules correctly.
As a primary step, the respective traffic officials should give prominence to installing sign boards and awareness classes. They should seek assistance from the Transport Department and non-governmental organisations for the effective implementation, the statement said. One-way traffic should be enforced wherever the diversion came into effect to avoid any traffic snarls.
The higher officials should deploy policemen in directing the public regarding the same. Besides, signboards should be installed at all junctions on the road where the diversions take place. The respective district police chief at the district headquarters, sub division police officers at the urban areas or circle inspectors should keep a check whether it is effectively implemented. Any traffic issue spotted during highway patrols and in highway alert system, should be passed over to the police accordingly.
The officials should also take care in finding casual contacts at places where traffic problems are worse. Any police officer can inform about the traffic blocks before Highway alert control number.
