THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:The Government G V Raja Sports School in the sleepy hamlet of Mylom in Cheriyakonni here has been given a ray of hope when Finance Minister K M Mani presented the 13th state budget in the Legislative Assembly here on Friday.
The G V Raja School, which has around 380 students studying in classes 8 to 12, and the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Kannur (known as the Kannur Sports Division), that produced the likes of P T Usha, M D Valsamma and Bobby Aloysius, have been promised an upgrade in infrastructure facilities in the state budget.
It comes as a shot in the arm for the institution, that once produced international athletes like Shiny Wilson and K M Beenamol, but is now travelling down a bleak path in search of redemption.
A total amount of Rs 61 crore has been earmarked for the improvement of infrastructure facilities at the government higher secondary schools across the state. However, it is not yet clear how much of this amount will be allocated for the two schools.
The G V Raja School was shifted to Mylom, over 10 km away from the city, in 2006 from the old Shangumugham campus that was taken over by the Indian Air Force.
Ever since, the performance graph of the school has slid as focus has turned to pure academics rather than on sports in the school run by the General Education Department.
