Nepali Youth Held After Repeated Thefts

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:Thampanoor police arrested a Nepali youth who allegedly broke into a private diagnostic centre near Government Women and Children’s Hospital at Thycaud here on Thursday.

The arrested has been identified as Mahesh Kumar, 23, of Mayapatta, Kathmandu, who was part of the three-member gang which broke into the shop.

 The two others escaped while a police party reached the spot following a tip-off.

The police said that the gang had committed several thefts in the state.

The charges against them registered at different police stations in Kochi include bike lifting, thefts at computer shops and a Beverages Corporation  outlet.

According to the police, Mahesh Kumar was released after a one-year term at the Viyyur Central Jail in February this year.

He had admitted of two thefts after the release- one at a computer shop in Kochi and another at a private financing enterprise in the capital.

The investigation team led by Fort Assistant Commissioner Sudhakaran Pillai included Circle Inspector Suresh V Nair, Sub Inspectors Sasidharan Pillai, Anil T George, Prem Basha, Lawrence.

City Police Commissioner H Venkatesh has formed a special team headed by Suresh V Nair to nab the absconding members of the gang.

He has also directed the police to conduct raids on migrant labourers’ camps following a revelation by the arrested person that some thieves were hiding in the camps, posing as labourers.
