THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State police chief K S Balasubramanian stepped down from his post on Saturday after a stupendous service of two-and-a-half years. He will hand over the baton to state police chief designate T P Senkumar officially on Sunday. Balasubramanian’s service was free from any major controversy.
A 1978 batch IPS officer, Balasubramanian is noted for his soft-spoken nature and a remarkable career of 37 years. During the farewell parade organised at the Special Armed Police Camp at Peroorkada on Saturday morning, Balasubramanian greeted the police force. However, later in the day, he responded to the media that he was distressed by the needless allegations about his involvement in the Mohammed Nisham case.
“I had tried my level best to transform the police force into a professional team. I can proudly say that the police force had handled the law and order situation with enough maturity and care,” he said. Being an alumni of Loyola College, Chennai, he began his career as ASP Crime Detachment, Wayanad, and became the SP of Pathanamthitta, Kollam and Alappuzha within a short span of time before assuming charge as DIG Intelligence and Transport Commissioner. He had received the President’s police medal for distinguished services while he was serving as a senior official in RAW. During his tenure, the police department witnessed several drastic changes, including modernisation and technology integration. A total of 10 coastal police stations were launched and the cyberdome project to curb cyber crimes is in the final stage. DGP designate T P Senkumar, who is presently, the DGP (Prisons), will assume charge on Monday.
