'Fort'itude in Adversity's Midst Theme for Play on Organ Recipients

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Federation of Renal Transplantees (FORT) has embarked on a mission to come out with a play depicting the trials and tribulations encountered by organ recipients, post surgery. To be directed by renowned playwright Francis T Mavelikkara, the theme will also deal with the issue of organ donation.

“It will etch every detail, including the trials and tribulations, an organ recipient has to undergo post-surgery. It will also deal with the (issue of) donating organs. Though, the awareness on organ donation has increased, there are still many patients on the list waiting for a suitable organ to save their lives,” said Adv A D Benny, secretary, FORT.

Actually, the move came about after FORT’s  efforts to express solidarity with the XXXV National Games hosted by Kerala as well as to draw the public’s attention to the odds faced by the organ recipients-- when 20 transplantees took part in the ‘Run Kerala Run’ mass run organised as a prelude to the Games-- failed to yield the desired results.

And the maiden foray in this regard took place when some of the organ recipients performed in front of a packed auditorium on January 10. “It was an attempt to hone their skills. Owing to unawareness, many patients post surgery see themselves as patients.  We sang karoke during FORT’s second conference held in Kochi. It was titled ‘Atmaragam’. It was then that we hit upon the idea,” said  Xavier Kochukudiyil, founder president, FORT. They are beside themselves with joy since Francis has decided to script the play for free.”We are overwhelmed by his gesture. Apart from the organ transplantees, there will be professionals also. The idea was suggested by Francis for a better reach,” Xavier said.

Once, the dress rehearsals have been completed, the performers will tour the state, with the play mainly to be staged at schools, colleges and hospitals. As for the production costs, Xavier said, “As it involves professionals, we will be in need of money. (The cost of) Music, costumes and setting will definitely come to around  `4-`5 lakh. We hope that, we will be able to raise it through sponsorship.” The efforts  by FORT are aimed at increasing awareness among patients, which will enable them to break free from self-imposed confinement within four walls of their home.
