THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:As many as 7.81 lakh people in Thiruvananthapuram, belonging to various age groups, are attending educational institutions, according to census data on education released by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner. Of them, 3.95 lakh are men and 3.86 lakh are women.
Thiruvananthapuram has a total population of 33.01 lakh and the data was collected as part of the decennial census exercise conducted during 2011. As many as 6.14 lakh of the district’s total population are attending schools, of which 3.12 lakh are males and 3.01 lakh are females.
In all, 1.11 lakh youngsters attend various colleges in the district. Of them, 0.529 lakh are males and 0.582 lakh are females. As many as 47,457 of the population, including 22,074 females, attend vocational institutions. According to the census data, 2,120 persons are attending special institutions, of which 1,166 are males and 954 are females.
As many as 990 persons are attending literacy centres, of whom the majority - 700 - are women. Another interesting fact thrown up by the census is that 3.98 lakh people in the district have never attended any educational institution. Of this group, 1.72 lakh are men and 2.25 lakh are women.
More men than women attend educational institutions in the rural areas of Thiruvananthapuram district. Of the 3.61 lakh people in the rural areas attending some form of educational institutions, 1.81 lakh are men while 1.79 lakh are women.
As many as 4.20 lakh people in the urban areas of the district attend educational institutions, of which 2.13 lakh are males and 2.06 are females.
