THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The project to set up modern bus shelters in the city may be delayed with the officials concerned not yet finalising its design. The designs are being done by the Indian Institute of Architects. Sources also point out that some officials were trying to sabotage the project for their personal gain by changing the designs citing damage to the eco-system.
Besides, the plan approval from city corporation is also likely to push the project into back-burner.
In the first phase of the project, smart bus shelters are being proposed at four bus stops such as University Library, Corporation Office, Medical College and in front of the Mascot Hotel.
The Wi-Fi enabled air-conditioned shelters are being proposed by the District Innovation Council to make commuting easy and to promote public transportation system.
‘Project on July 11’
When contacted, District Collector Biju Prabhakar, who is spearheading the proposal, said the project would be launched on July 11 whatever be the objections.
“Though there is an inordinate delay in completing the designs by the entrusted agency, we are committed to start the project at the earliest. In fact, we will launch it officially on July 11 itself. If there is any delay from the part of city corporation, we will make it possible through ‘deemed provisions’. If the designs are not completed in the said time, I will hand over the designing job to Nirmithi Kendra or other agencies “, said Prabhakar.
Sponsors ready
Four sponsors have shown keen interest in the project. They are State Bank of Travancore, Bank of Baroda, South Indian Bank and Vijaya Bank. SBT is the front runner and they will spend Rs 15 lakh per unit in the initial phase. According to S Adikeshavan, chief general manager, SBT, the first modern shelter will be erected near University Library in front of the Kerala University campus. “Talks are on with District Innovation Council. We will begin the work once the design gets approval”, he said.
Meanwhile, the public have been demanding more such facilities in the city as many of the shelters are in a bad shape.
“I am a daily commuter and rely mostly on public transport. At present, we had to suffer the heat, rain and dust while waiting buses. The authorities should take steps to extend the project,” said K M Manoj, a government official.
