THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Award winning art director Sabu Cyril was in the city to attend the Animation Masters Summit 2016, organized by Toonz Media Group. He spoke to ‘City Express’ about his journey from a graphic designer to an acclaimed art director and the new challenges that he faces in the art projects.
Q) Where are you coming from?
I came to attend this function from Mumbai. I am currently doing a project for Ajay Devgan directed ‘Shivay’.
Q) How challenging is the movie for you especially after being production designer for Bahubali?
I went after Devgan requested me. The movie has a lot of action sequence. I created an avalanche sequence for the movie at Mumbai.
Q) How is the work for Bahubali sequel going on?
We are currently working on it at three locations in Hyderabad. Almost 30% of the shooting for the second part had been completed during part one. So we did not have to recreate the settings in many sequence. The second part is also as challenging as the first part, though I cannot reveal you the exact scenes.
Q) What has changed in art industry from the days you created a shark for Amaram to the mammoth settings for Bahubali?
A lot. We need to keep updating the technology. If you have seen the recent movie, The Jungle Book, you will know that everything looks real. Advancement in computer graphics have made this possible.
Q) How do you keep yourself updated with the technology?
I have kept a Google alert on developments in science and technology.
Q) Which is the recent technology that attracted you?
The physics application available online are a great thing to be incorporated in movies.
Q) Will it be a challenge to integrate both art and technology?
It is more challenging. We may be using the most advanced computer graphics but we still have to work on the lighting and other details to match it.
