THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Cotton Hill has launched ‘Cotton Hill Pink FM’, an in-house radio broadcast for its students. Programmes are conceived and executed by students under minimal monitoring by the teachers. The broadcast is from 12.30 pm to 1.20 pm and speakers have been installed in all classrooms and on different parts of the campus. A 30-member RJ team has been selected from among students of 8,9 and 10 classes.   Five of the team members will be in charge of a day’s telecast. Programmes will cover science information, health, beauty and cooking tips. A four-day trial run was successful, according to the teachers.

“This is exciting as we are given freedom to plan programmes. Though teachers would give the final clearance for programmes we are given sufficient freedom,” said Aparna Prabhakar, an RJ and ninth standard student.According to Aparna, the broadcast would also help in developing current affairs and general knowledge. “There will be small bulletins on the day’s developments, of state, national and international importance,” she added.

There will also be interviews with teachers or students who have made an achievement.
Teachers said their role would be supervisory and students would be encouraged to conceive programmes. “We want to develop their creativity and organisational skills. Hence, we will have only a supervisory role,” said a teacher.    But there are two programmes anchored by teachers for giving safety tips to students. One of them is titled ‘Alpaneram Alpanimisham’.    Broadcast is from a studio and cabin in the principal’s office.
