THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a bid to prevent road accidents owing to increase in the racing instinct of youths, the city shadow police have conducted a surprise inspection titled ‘Alter Ego’ on Tuesday and seized around 50 vehicles. The surprise check was held after reports that many youths in the city were altering their vehicles to increase the power and speed.

The altered vehicles often get involved in accidents and this prompted the law enforces to take strict action against the offenders. According to the police, such vehicles also create a nuisance to the public. The inspections have been conducted at Fort, Medical College, Vellayambalam, Kowdiar, Enchakkal bypass, Vanchiyoor, Pettah, Museum, Karamana, Poojappura, Mannanthala, Vizhinjam, Kovalam and Vattiyoorkavu.

They seized the motorcycles which were found altered. The offenders were subjected to an awareness session and imposed fine on them. City police commissioner P Prakash said the crackdown on altered vehicles will be conducted in the coming days and the city police would initiate action along with Motor Vehicles Department to cancel the registration of such vehicles.

Two weeks ago, a 23-year-old youngster was killed after the brand new car he was driving rammed an autorickshaw and footpath at Kowdiar.  The police said the speeding of the vehicle led to the accident.
