Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College all set for a major transformation

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government Medical College is all set to undergo a major transformation.

Taking the lead to upgrade it into a Centre fo Excellence, the government has engaged the Infrastructure Kerala Limited (Inkel) as the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for implementing the ambitious initiative.

Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) was earlier roped in as the consultant to prepare a master plan for the Government Medical College.

INKEL has now been designated as the SPV after KSIDC requested the same for the project for which it has been directed to prepare the Detailed Project Report.

KSIDC managing director informed the government that SPCs have to carry out the entire project and there is no need for an intermediary agency like KSIDC to implement it.

In the 2017-18 budget, an amount of Rs 400 crore had been earmarked for the first phase of the project ‘Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram,’ through Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). The funding rules of KIIFB specifies an SPV.

The master plan of the medical college is likely to be prepared by taking into account the draft plan already prepared by Habitat technology group with the assistance of the Medical College alumni association and the Centre of Excellence Project submitted by the college. The new master plan will look into all issues affecting the patients, doctors, students and visitors.

Moreover, it will also look into future development issues that may come up. As part of the treatment facilities, there are proposals to set up equipment of international standards, operation theatres and other facilities for each of the departments.

The 140-acre campus now houses the medical college, hospital, Sri Chitra Tirunal Centre for Medical Sciences and Technology, Regional Cancer Centre, SAT Hospital, office of the Directorate of Medical Education, dental college, nursing college and pharmacy college.
