Rs 30-crore ‘ecosystem’ for building laptops, servers in state

Giving a shot in the arm for making the state a hardware and electronics manufacturing hub, an ‘electronic industrial ecosystem’  is on the anvil in the state.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Giving a shot in the arm for making the state a hardware and electronics manufacturing hub, an ‘electronic industrial ecosystem’  is on the anvil in the state. Setting the wheels in motion, the state Cabinet has asked Keltron to form a special purpose vehicle (SPV) in this regard. The SPV will have Keltron, Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation and allied industries operating in the state as shareholders. The initial cost of setting up an ‘electronic industrial ecosystem’ has been pegged at R30 crore.

“The electronic industrial ecosystem is for developing laptops and servers. It was based on the report of the Hardware Mission that such an initiative is being planned. Intel Corporation has already expressed their willingness to become part of the project,” said a statement from Chief Minister’s Office.

While saying the proposed initiative is being planned at the Keltron plot at Manvila, the statement further claims the initiative will become a breath of fresh air for the electronic and hardware industry of the state.
“At present, laptops and server class machines are not being manufactured in the country.

It is being assembled here. Thus the proposed ‘electronic industrial ecosystem’ project could become an asset to the country. The laptops and servers will be produced by using the Intel processors,” said the statement. With the state government having an annual demand for one lakh laptops, the proposed electronic industrial ecosystem’s production capacity has also been estimated at that number. Meanwhile, it is said the proposed project will have the price preference being mentioned in Kerala IT Policy for three years.
