THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The police cyber wing have arrested a man, who allegedly stole over J12 lakh from a senior citizen’s bank account.

Mohanan, 54, of Vattiyoorkavu, is accused to have cheated his 86-year-old female employer.
According to the police, Mohanan had been working as a domestic aide at her house for the past year. The complainant alleged that she had given her debit card and PIN to Mohanan as he was a trusted aide. But he withdrew money in several instalments without her knowledge.

The complainant’s children were settled abroad and used to transfer huge sums to her account. The complainant never used the debit card and withdrew money by using over-the-counter transactions with the help of Mohanan.

The accused used to withdraw money using the debit card only on the days when he was sent to the bank for over-the-counter withdrawal. He later used to delete the SMS alerts on her phone after switching off the surveillance cameras installed at the living room of the house.

The fraud had been going on for some months until she saw the SMS alerts. Sensing danger, Mohanan left the job and joined another household in Thachottukavu.

The police recovered Rs 5 lakh and several mobile phones from the accused. Sleuths said the accused had bought two-wheelers for his relatives using the stolen money. He was produced in the court and remanded.
