Veli Tourist Village to get major makeover

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Veli Tourist Village, one of the favoured weekend holiday spots in the city, will get a major makeover with Tourism Department undertaking a series of renovation works and security measures. Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran inaugurated the security and renovation work at a function held here on Wednesday.

The Tourism Department has already undertaken a slew of works,  including installing security cameras, erecting solar lights, beautification of pavements, electrification, renovation of children’s park and Shangukulam pond, and other infrastructure development, as part of making the destination more tourist-friendly.

The department will also construct a tourism complex at the  1.8 acres of plot opposite to the main gate of Veli Tourism Village.The tourism complex comprises a tourist felicitation centre, convention centre and a three-star hotel. The tourist felicitation centre, for which a sum of Rs 3.60 crore was sanctioned, will have facilities like public lounge, visitors lobby, ticket counter service room, first aid room, cloakroom, and toilet facility for both men and women.

The convention centre, estimated to cost Rs 10 crore will accommodate around 800 people andwill have facilities like a stage, dining hall, and other facilities. Further, a three-star hotel with 25 rooms and other facilities would come up at the proposed place, the design of which is underway.

Projects completed
● As many as 37 solar lights were erected at a cost of H28.40 lakh
● Around 32 closed circuit security cameras were installed at the tourist village at a cost of H37.79 crore
● The children’s park is renovated at a cost of H12.42 lakh
● The park has been equipped with facilities like four-seater air swing, triple wave slide, merry go round, spiral slide, circular swing and  VIP benches
● Shangukulam is renovated at a cost of H61.18 lakh
● Handrails have been installed along the pavements at a cost of H6.40 lakh
