THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The recent two-day Tree School camp held at Balavihar in Vazhuthacaud set an example of how education can contribute to the well-being of society. At a time when digital learning is moving at a fast pace, the camp engaged its participants with activities close to nature.

About 40 children belonging to the age group of 7-16 participated in the Tree School camp, an initiative of Tree Walk launched by artist Sajitha Sankar.  If day one of the camp focused on technical aspects of educating children on the need of saving biodiversity, the second was more activity oriented.

The participants engaged in several activities such as tree walks, green art, tree spotting, tree stories and a few interactive sessions with ecologists and botanists. The children were also provided with classes on how to nurture and conserve trees.

“We were so happy as the participants were actively involved in all the sessions. They raised some serious questions,” said Anita S, coordinator of the event. The Tree Walk was the highlight activity where the children were taken for a walk through the diverse ecosystem around the ‘Balavihar’ surroundings.

“I’ve been noticing a significant change in my daughter ever since she started attending tree school camps. Now, she spots and names many trees in our locality,” said Radha Mohan, a parent.  The camp also urged the children to reduce the usage of paper products and non-biodegradable substances.

“We aim to bring a positive change in our society so that the future generation becomes more responsible towards nature,” Anita said. Dr Dhanya Menon, a freelance cyber crime investigator, presented certificates to the participants. She also familiarised the cyber world to the children.
