THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Balaramapuram police have started an investigation into the death of a 17-year-old girl student, who was found hanging in the washroom of a religious institution near Balaramapuram on Saturday.

The girl is identified as Asmiya Mol of Vallakkadavu. Her relatives alleged that she was subjected to mental harassment by the institution’s teachers. According to relatives, Asmiya had called her mother on Saturday afternoon and informed her wish to discontinue her studies at the institution. However, when her mother reached the institution by evening, she was not allowed to meet the girl. By 6 pm, the mother was informed that Asmiya was unwell.

Later, she was found hanging in the washroom. The staff of the institution and her mother rushed her to a private hospital, but she could not be saved. The relatives alleged that Asmiya was subjected to mental harassment at the institution, and she had told this to her mother during a visit.

Meanwhile, the institution’s staff said the girl was admitted for a vacation course by her parents against her wish. They claimed that the girl repeatedly sought permission to contact her mother over the phone at odd times. Since the request was overturned, she was visibly unhappy. This likely prompted her to take the extreme step, the staff said. The police, meanwhile, said they will record the statements of the institution’s staff.
