VIJAYAWADA: Even two weeks after the first year Intermediate student of Gudavalli Narayana College P Eswar Reddy committed suicide in the hostel room owing to the management’s alleged harassment, no action has been initiated against it. The college belongs to Narayana Group of Institutions.

The 16-year-old first year MPC student Eswar Reddy of Manchikarli village in Guntur district committed suicide by hanging himself on September 17 after the college vice-principal Rajesh allegedly insulted and beat him up in front of other students for scoring less marks in a weekly test. Despite the Regional Inspection Officer’s report to Secretary and Commissioner of Board of Intermediate Education (BIEAP) B Udaya Lakshmi on the incident, Human Resource Development Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao is yet to initiate action against the college. It was alleged that the college management’s obsession for better results, drove the student to suicide.

“In the report to the BIEAP Commissioner, it is clearly mentioned that the deceased student was beaten up by the staff for scoring poor marks and insulted. It is against the regulations set by Chakrapani Committee on Corporal Punishment in junior colleges. We thought that action will be taken against the college immediately, but we are yet to get directions from our bosses in this regard,” said a senior official of RIO on condition of anonymity.

According to the official data, as many as 40 students studying in various private junior colleges in Krishna district have committed suicide in the last two years. Shockingly, 35 of the total suicide cases are reported from Narayana and Sri Chaitanya group of colleges.

Ironically, a day after the boy’s death on September 18, Human Resource Development Minister Srinivasa Rao said the college would be closed. But, no action has been taken in this regard so far. The Minister was not available for comment on the issue.
