VIJAYAWADA: A first year intermediate student of Sri Chaitanya College ended his life by hanging himself to the ceiling fan of a classroom early on Friday. With this, the number of students who have killed themselves in October has gone up to nine. This is the fourth such incident in Krishna district in the period. Patamata CI K Damodhar said the deceased student, Aramati Bhargav Reddy, belonged to Rayachoti mandal of Kadapa district and was pursuing MPC at the Santha Bhawan campus in Nidamanuru village. On Thursday, he had dinner around 9 pm and went to his friend’s room to sleep.

The next day, he was seen hanging from the ceiling fan of a classroom on the first floor.

The 16-year-old was spotted by a sweeper who immediately alerted the hostel warden and college management about the death. The boy was rushed to a private hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. His body was shifted to the Government General Hospital for postmortem. “His room is 218, but he slept in 118 on Thursday night. The incident could have occurred around 5:20 am, by which time workers open the doors to classrooms.

“Bhargav hanged himself with a washing line he borrowed from his friend two days ago,” the CI said.
Tension ran high at the campus in Nidamanuru after the boy’s family and friends were stopped by police from entering the campus premises. The Krishna district chapter of SFI reached the spot and raised slogans against the college management demanding justice.

Bhargav’s father Narayana Reddy and relatives said the boy was depressed as he was not able to perform well in his exams. Narayana Reddy held the college management responsible for their son’s condition, saying he was his school’s topper and never a dull child. “The college management killed my son,” the distraught father alleged.

However, the management said the student was never pressured over his marks. “All the allegations levelled against us are baseless. Bhargav cried after he spoke to his father on Thursday before resorting to the extreme step,” said college principal Kalluri Lakshmi Prasad.Meanwhile, HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao said the government will soon set up a helpline for students to share their concerns. The Education Department will hold a state-level meetings with managements of Intermediate colleges with Chakrapani committee members in attendance.
