VIJAYAWADA: Refuting the allegations against him regarding the land scam, TDP MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao said that he would quit politics if his involvement in it was proved. “If anyone proves my involvement in the land scam, I will retire from politics. I’m challenging them,” the MLA said.

In a press conference on Sunday, Umamaheswara Rao said that opposition parties were slinging mud to defame him and his party, and stated that he was nowhere connected to the land scam. The central MLA, along with his wife, was recently alleged to have encroached a 5.16-acre land allotted to freedom fighter Kasireddy Suryanarayana.

Showing the documents related to the development agreement registered between his wife Sujatha and the prime accused--Abdul Masthan, Rao said it was cancelled after learning that the land was disputed. “We have submitted all the documents to the CID officials and sought exemption from the investigation,” he said.

Upon being asked about the actions taken against his close aide Maganti Babu, Bonda said that he was suspended from the party and a representation was given to the district collector requesting to hold a detailed inquiry. He further requested public not to believe those claiming to be the MLA’s aides. “If any such land grabbing case comes to your notice, please approach me or local leaders. We will take serious action,” he assured.
