Vijayawada Municipal Corporation: Geographic Information System survey launched amidst criticism

VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials have launched Geographic Information System (GIS) survey on a pilot basis in the 43rd division of the city to provide a unique digital door number to buildings, both residential and commercial.

According to the information available with the VMC officials, as part of the survey digital door number will be provided to the houses, commercial establishments and various buildings, which will be linked to a satellite. Enumerators from the Hyderabad-based Ananth Technologies have already commenced a trial survey in 43rd division. The officials have set a May-end deadline to complete the survey across the city.

‘’The firm conducting the survey will also develop a mobile application for the convenience of the residents commuting across the city. The new system will have all data regarding the properties in the civic body’s jurisdiction, such as the status of the payment of property tax, the area of the property, purpose of their use and others. The officials will be able to access this data in real- time,” said a senior VMC official on condition of anonymity.

Sources said that the system was also expected to unearth properties that might not have been assessed for property tax. However, the decision of the VMC has invited criticism from various quarters of the society.
The critics of the VMC initiative said that the civic body had already allotted digital door numbers to houses in the city two years ago. They alleged that the corporation was spending crores of rupees in the name of the GIS survey.

‘’Two years ago, the VMC had introduced digital house numbers across the city as part of transforming Vijayawada into a smart city. Zippr Private Limited of Hyderabad conducted a survey and collected details of ration card, Aadhar card, property tax, PAN card, voter ID of the building owners and issued unique identification codes to all commercial buildings.
