FIFA, already under fire for making the world’s biggest sporting event the costliest ever, has raised the top ticket price for the World Cup final—to be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 20—to $10,990, up from $1,600 in 2022. The average prices are also far higher than at Qatar 2022 and Russia 2018. Football’s overlords seem oblivious to the thousands of fans across the world—including many in India—who save up for four years to make the quadrennial pilgrimage. Maybe it’s just as well. With indiscriminate border enforcement and high airfares adding to the troubles, fans are better off giving the tournament in the US, Canada and Mexico a pass. Let watch parties with giant screens be the flavour this year.
