Mudras are finger postures performed by gently pressing two fingertips and by flexing and stretching the other fingers in a specific pattern. The nerve endings in the fingertips are stimulated, locked energies are released and imbalances are corrected within the body.

The human body is made up of five elements called the pancha tatvas. They are fire, air, ether, earth and

water. Each finger represents an element. The thumb represents agni or fire. The index finger represents vayu or the air element. The middle finger represents akash or ether. The ring finger represents prithvi or earth. The little finger represents varun or the water element.

Many mudras were created by the ancient sages and only a few of them that  heal are practiced. Mudras can be practiced from five to 15 minutes anywhere and at anytime, either separately or while performing asanas, pranayama or meditation.
