I have received many queries related to free websites for learning English. So this week I will be reviewing two good websites: BBC Learning English and VOA Learning English. These websites are managed by two leading broadcasters: British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and Voice of America (VOA).

BBC Learning English website www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish is a great portal for learners of English. It has rich content which is written by experts in the ELT field and is error free. The website has different sections like General and Business English, Vocabulary and Pronunciation, Talking Sports, Quizzes, etc. In the Grammar, Vocabulary and Pronunciation section learners can access programmes like Today’s Phrase, Words in the News, Slang and Everyday English Expressions, Pronunciation Tips, etc. Here is a sample from Today’s Phrase: The meaning of the phrase ‘Get into the swing of things’, is explained through good examples. The phrase means ‘To join in, get involved or make progress with something’.  For example:

•  We’re here to enjoy the music – why don’t you relax and get into the swing of things?

•  Jane started her new job on Monday and quickly got into the swing of things.

•  After returning from his holiday, John couldn’t get into the swing of things back at work.

The difference in meaning between the phrase ‘To get into the swing of things’ and ‘Take a swing at someone’ is also explained. The phrase ‘Take a swing at someone’ means to attempt to punch someone. For example,

•  During the Christmas party Bob tried to kiss Barbara, so Dave took a swing at him.

In the ‘Ask about English’ section learners can get their queries answered by experts. There are answers to queries posted by learners from different parts of the world. Learners and teachers can download PDF scripts/transcripts, vidoe and audio files.  These files can help learners develop their listening skills and learn English in an authentic and interesting way.

Teachers will also find the BBC Learning English site very useful. It has many sections such as Watch and Listen, Teaching Ideas and Worksheets, and Innovations in Teaching. They can download worksheets, audio files and videos and use them for their classes.  This site is apt for a teacher’s professional development. Recently, BBC Learning English won two awards at the British Council’s ELTons ceremony. The ELTons are the annual awards for innovation in English language teaching (ELT).

In the second part of the article I’ll give a review of VOA Learning English website.
