How a small microprocessor carries out innumerous automation and computation processes was something that intrigued Prof Senthil Kumar, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. It inspired him to pen his fourth book, Microprocessors and Interfacing.
Published in April 2012, the book “provides a brief overview of the 8085 processor, followed by a detailed discussion of the 8086 architecture, programming, and interfacing concepts. The book also discusses the 8-bit 8051 and 16-bit 8096 microcontrollers, and advanced processors such as 80186, 80286, 80386, 80486, Pentium, and embedded controllers such as RISC, CISC, SUNSPARC, and ARM,” explains Kumar.
After completing his BE from Madurai Kamaraj University, Prof Kumar went on to pursue his ME from Anna University, Chennai. He then joined the college and has completed 20 years in the teaching profession. He says, “There was scarcity of a single book that covered all the concepts of processor technology starting from the basic processor to the latest Pentium processor and other microcontrollers. Moreover, as microprocessors and interfacing have become an interdisciplinary subject students from different branches of engineering are required to take up this course. This motivated us to cater to the demand thus created among the students of having a single book in this area.”
Even though the book was developed targeting students of engineering courses, the book has also caught the attention of science students across various universities in the country. “The books is also doing well in other countries, thanks to Oxford University Press,” says the 45-year-old.
Kumar loves reading non-fiction books in the genre of personality development, life skills, mental peace and detective novels. “I used to watch TV and listen to music, but that was a long time ago. Now I understand that I have a lot to learn and explore. So, I spend my time reading books, current affairs and do research on the net. I also solve puzzles and Sudoku,” he says.
