WISE Accelerator to boost new and innovative education ventures

The World Innovation Summit for Education has launched a tailor-made mentorship programme to support high potential and scalable projects that address education challenges in innovative ways. In this inaugural year, the WISE Accelerator is seeking projects that use technology — from the conception of apps and digital games to the creation of online platforms or the design of new curricula and pedagogies integrating technology. All education projects that are using or designing technology are invited to apply. Each year, seven projects will be selected to join the year-long mentorship programme during which they will benefit from expert mentoring to help build effective and sustainable growth strategies in the areas of financial management, marketing, operational implementation, legal and human resources, and others. The programme will officially kick off at the WISE Summit 2014, November 4-6 in Doha, Qatar, where the selected projects will be invited to take part in specific workshops and be offered unique networking opportunities. SOA University focuses on research

Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan University (SOA), Bhubaneswar, has identified 18 thrust areas in research and has set up 10 research and field centres alongside 16 supporting research laboratories. SOAU’s Indexed Publications number 1443 today, 1034 of them being Scopus Indexed. The rest are indexed in other databases. It has five publications with SCI Impact Factor greater than 5 and an H Index of 21, the highest among private universities in Odisha.

BITS Pilani ties-up with edX

Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences, Pilani, has partnered with edX, a non-profit, open source learning destination, to enhance learning and offer MOOCs. BITS Pilani will offer 60 courses over three years for students across its four campuses and its off-campus programmes through the Edge platform of edX while also offering several courses every year as MOOCs through edX. Vice Chancellor of BITS Pilani Prof Bijendra Nath Jain, and Prof Shan Balasubramaniam, Dean for Academic and Resource Planning, announced the initial agreement plans. Courses offered through these platforms will enable self-paced learning with a variety of online digital content including recorded videos, online exercises and computer-based simulations. Vel Tech organises Inspire Internship Science Camp

Vel Tech Dr RR and Dr SR Technical University organised a five-day Inspire Internship Science Camp from July 1-5. July 2014. Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) is an innovative programme sponsored and managed by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Science. This five day Science Camp was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Vijayamohanan K Pillai, Director CSIR – Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CECRI), Karaikudi, TN and Prof J Daniel Chellappa, Senior Scientist, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Department of Atomic Energy, Tamil Nadu. Rangarajan Mahalakshmi Kishore, Chairperson and Managing Trustee of Vel Tech University, Chancellor RP Bajpai and Dr Beela Satyanarayana, Vice Chancellor, Vel Tech University were present. Over 200 students from Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur district participated in this event. More than 20 Academy Fellows, Bhatnagar Awardees, Scientists and academicians of national and international repute conducted sessions.

Gitam skill centre in Karnataka

GITAM University will establish a skill development centre in Karnataka to train unemployed youth. The Karnataka German Technical Training Institute (KGTTI) Director H Srinivasaiah, visited the campus and held discussions with the administration on this proposal. Three more training centres in Mysore, Ballary and Mangalore might also be established. GITAM University Registrar Prof M Potharaju was also present at the meeting. Companies like Dr Reddy’s Lab, Larus Lab, Vizag Steel Plant, NSTL, IBM, HCL, TCS, Instruments India, Erricson India have signed MoUs with GITAM University for academic enhancement. The University is planning to establish GITAM Center for Fundamental Research in Karnataka to take up research in the areas of Biotechnology, Rural Technology, Nano Technology. German International Service Organisation Senior Advisor N Venugopal, Team Leader T Somanath, GITAM School of Technology In charge Principal NV Krishna Prasad and others participated in the meeting.

KIIT inks MoU with Central Tibetan Admin

A MoU was signed between KIIT University, Bhubaneswar and Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) of Tibet Government in New Delhi on July 4. The MoU was signed by A Samanta, founder, KIIT and KISS, on behalf of KIIT, and Sikyong Lobsang Sangay, on behalf of CTA. On mutual interests the institutes will focus on collaborative research, capacity building, pedagogy development, training and counseling and preservation and promotion of Tibetan culture.

Atyanta-2014 at held Hindustan university

Hindustan University recently conducted “ATYANTA-2014”, the annual ZONASA Convention at its campus in Chennai. Zonasa is the zonal convention of National Association of Students of Architecture (NASA), a student body for association of the undergraduate students of Architecture in India. ZONASA was inaugurated by Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, Hindustan University and S Ramachandra , Vice Chancellor Hindustan University along with Jaisim Krishna Rao, Founder -Jaisim Fountain Head, Banglore as the chief guest, and Chandan Chowdry, and W Anand, Chairman, Indian Institute of Architects Chennai Chapter. This annual convention saw participation of over 50 colleges with more than 1,200 delegates from various architecture schools across Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the three-day long event. School of Architecture and Planning Anna University won the over all trophy Dr KCG Verghese Memorial Trophy. Faculty of Architecture Sathyabama University Chennai and School of Architecture MES, Kerala, were the first and second runner up respectively.

Pursue BA Hons in Textiles in UK

School of the Arts at UK’s Loughborough University is offering BA (Hons) Textiles: Innovation and Design course. The course topped the ’Fashion &Textiles’ category in the Guardian University League Table 2015. The course aims to develop a good knowledge of textiles culture and practice. The first-year primarily introduces fundamental skills to students while including: research, drawing, design development and critical and contextual understanding. In the second year, students will opt for a specialised pathway within specific disciplines of Printed Textiles, Woven Textiles or Multimedia Textiles, supported by Business and Entrepreneurial Practice and Critical and Historical Studies. In the third year, students are encouraged to develop specialised knowledge. This can be extended to a four-year course by either taking up the option of an industrial training placement or foreign university placement. Avail Studentship to pursue MSc Gender History in UK

The University of Glasgow, UK, is inviting applications for its MSc in Gender History for the 2014-15 academic session. They are also offering a Studentship for the programme. A student with excellent scores in their undergraduation can apply for this Studentship. The subject aims to explore gender history, across a range of periods and places, in association with the Centre for Gender History of the University.The Centre was established in 2008 and conducts research on the subject of History, Economics and Social History. The course includes two core modules — Gender, Politics and Power and Gender, Culture and Text. The Glasgow University Gendering History reading group is organised by postgraduate students on a six-weekly basis and discussions on gender and other theories and histories are held. Applications should consist of a letter outlining the applicant’s current and future interests in gender history and a writing sample (eg an essay or dissertation).
