Social service is his calling. Travelling to and fro between Dhenkanal and Bhubaneswar and juggling  studies, social service and his passion photography, Smrutiranjan Biswal is a happy person. He is the founder of a social service organisation ‘Being Indian Foundation’.

An MTech student at Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology, Dhenkanal, his heart cringes over issues that paralyse society. Four years ago he decided to act against it and with four friends he formed the social organisation. “It was a decision taken in spur of a moment. I just came back to Bhubaneswar after finishing BTech from Annamalai University, Chennai, when one day we were discussing issues that plague the society and then and there we decided to work together for it,” says Smrutiranjan who is in his early twenties.

At present, there are 35 youngsters in the group who come from different ends of the social spectrum and are making the right noises. They unanimously believe that they can make a difference to the country through their work like blood donation, breast and cervical cancer awareness, working for orphans and donating books and stationery to the poor children. Working through five centres, including Chennai and Delhi , these are the Generation X social activists who are eager to see a better India.

Talking about funds, he said, “Every charitable organisation runs on the contribution from patrons and so is this. I am deeply indebted to all the donors. As far as spending time is concerned, this is my first concern. Everyone should do their bit for the nation. A good deed gives more happiness than anything else,” he signs off.
