Located almost at the intersection of the borders of three States, the PES Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (PESIMSR) at Kuppam, has a unique history.
When Chandrababu Naidu was the Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, the People’s Education Society (PES) was invited to set up an educational institute. The Society, which was setup in 1972, was already a renowned name in the State of Karnataka by then.
Recalling the same, Chairman of the PES Group, M R Doreswamy charted the course that PESIMSR has taken over the course of the past decade. After being inaugurated in 2003 by the then president of India, Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, the Institute has grown in leaps and bounds. Today, it is one of the most sought after medical colleges in the region.
Affiliated to the NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, it is recognised by the Medical Council of India, New Delhi. Undergraduate courses such as MBBS, Bachelor of Science in Medical Lab Technology and BSc Nursing are offered. Post-graduate courses include MD in 15 disciplines, MS in five disciplines and MSc for nursing. Several paramedical courses are also being offered here.
With an aspiration to provide world-class education and health services under the same roof, a super-speciality hospital with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities was inaugurated recently at the campus, spread over 100 acres in Kuppam.
“One of the advantages in terms of education is that PESIMSR is a residential college. With students, teachers and reputed doctors living inside the same campus, it becomes very convenient for budding medical practitioners to learn from the best in the field,” Doreswamy said.
Under the leadership of Dr Suresh Krishnamurthy, Director of the institute and a reputed cardiologist, adopting and learning new technology has been faster. “After he took over, he has been upgrading facilities, which are on par with the best facilities provided in the world,” he noted.
Apart from providing education, the institute has also been offering medical assistance to the economically weaker sections of society, under schemes of Andra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu governments. Free medicines are being provided to beneficiaries of NTR Vaidya Seva, a scheme of Andhra Pradesh government and a similar one of Tamil Nadu government.
To a question, Doreswamy said that the Christian Medical College, Vellore was the role-model. “We wanted to emerge as one of the best medical service providers in the country. By doing this, we will be helping our students to learn practically and patients to derive benefit from best facilities,” he said.
The super-speciality hospital, which was inaugurated four months ago by Union Minister of Urban Development, Venkaiah Naidu, will be strengthened further in every aspect. When complete, it will have all the facilities required to achieve these objectives, he said. Apart from it, the institute has a tie-up with the Malaysian Government, under which students from PESIMSR and medical colleges in Malaysia will take part in an academic exchange programme, he added.
