Crooning a mellifluous romantic melody ‘Thattathin Marayathu’ for the Malayalam film Thattathin Marayathu in 2012, Sachin Warrier made his way into the hearts of thousands of listeners. The techie-turned-playback singer had a gamut of chartbusters from there on, rendered in his signature style. His voice has graced the latest movies Nee-Naa and Nirnayakam and the upcoming flick 32am Adhyayam 23am Vaakyam. The song, ‘Omal Kanmani’, in 32am Adhyayam 23am Vaakyam has been lapped up by music lovers already.

A self-taught keyboardist and guitarist, Sachin, who forayed into film music back in 2010, has for the past one year been composing jingles. For all the commendable strides he made as a musician, the 25-year-old engineering grad says he owes much to the grooming in his college, Federal Institute of Science and Technology (FISAT) in Angamaly, Kochi.

“Until joining the college, I was a singer known only in my family and school circuits and I did not know how to take my passion forward. College showed the way. I got a like-minded group of friends. We discussed music, shared our dreams and aspirations together. While some wanted to sing, there were those who dreamt of composing. All of us were caught up with the latest trends in music,” Sachin says, going down the memory lane.

Sachin says he picked engineering as he thought it would help him land a secure job, being convinced that he could get a decent rank in the Kerala Medical-Engineering entrance examination.

In college, Sachin and friends formed a band, which even had their seniors in the fold. This tryst with music brought him the most memorable moments of his student life. “One evening, in my second year, we as a team hosted a music performance in a dim lit setting at college.  Many students from other colleges gathered at the function. That day I realised the satisfaction of performing. It was so magical and visually enticing and I keep rewinding it in my mind and watch its clippings often,” he smiles.

Sachin had his first studio experience when he got a chance to sing a number for a Tamil music album of one of his seniors. Apart from this, he was part of the chorus in the signature song of a sports event the college hosted. In the third year, through Facebook he came to know about the singer audition for the movie Malarvadi Arts Club. “Though my bit was only a couple of lines in the song, it meant a lot to me. After the release of the movie, its director Vineeth Sreenivasan came as a guest to our college and together we performed on stage; an unforgettable day it was,” he says.

The newbie singer got immense appreciation from his college mates. “We had a college tour then. A part of our team went to watch Malarvadi Arts Club and they showered me with accolades on seeing the name of ‘their boy’ on the scroll.” The popularity earned him a fan base in college too.

For teachers, to see a wonderful singer emerge out of the quiet and shy boy in class was completely unexpected. They never discouraged Sachin and offered him all support. The go-getter, on finishing the course, got into a well-reputed MNC in Chennai, where he worked for three-years before quitting the job seven months ago to devote his days to music, also keeping alive a dream to do something good for the society.
