Odisha's Princess of Pop Music

Singer Navya Jaiti narrates her journey to stardom as Prachitara listens in

The 23-year-old singer Navya Jaiti has carved a unique niche with her versatile voice in the regional music industry in Odisha. Her highly energetic style, audience interaction and rich texture have caught the fancy of the youth.  “I never dreamt of becoming a singer, rather I was more into dance in my school days. This is actually my father’s dream and I’m loving it”, said the singer who is famous for her Pop singing.  In her career spanning seven years, Navya has lent her voice for many leading actors of the Odia cine industry, besides doing numerous stage shows. “Due to the financial crisis, I never enjoyed my college days,” says the singer, who completed +2 in 2008 and  did a PG in Political Science  through correspondence. To meet the financial needs, she conducted tuition classes and taught dance in some institutes. “I was very shy and silent during those days and never tried to be a singer.”

It was the reality show Amari Swara in 2009 which turned her life around. “After clearing two rounds in the reality show, my father was very happy and would wake me up early to do riyaaz, said Navya who was then the favourite of the judges. After reaching the semi-final, she got a chance to perform on stage. “I missed many of my classes and thanks to all my friends and teachers, I managed.” Recollecting her proudest moment, Navya said the day she performed and choreographed a Telugu song for the Annual Day function of her college, the principal appreciated it quite a bit. “I can never forget that moment,” Navya adds.
