The now-viral song I’m a Mallu by Rinosh George is racking up the hits for one reason — because every net-savvy Malayali in the world can relate to it. The 23-year old singer who burst on the scene with his song This is Bengaluru a year ago. Both the songs have crossed 5 lakh views and both songs have something in common — the songs are a part of Rinosh himself, and he loves that identity of being a Malayali, born and brought up in Bengaluru.
With its rhyming rap, colourful visuals, and the sort of beat that gets you on your feet, the song has a tint of the rebellious young Malayali attitude. Though very subtly, the song also touches on the subject of the beef ban. “When the controversies regarding the beef ban was going on, Kerala had taken a strong stand by celebrating beef festivals across the state. It’s not about being a rebel, it’s about not having religious disparity in the state. Controversies like these bring us together and makes me proud of being a mallu. The song became a success only because the things said in it are relatable to any mallu,” Rinosh says.
When Rinosh first tried explaining to his parents that he wanted to make a music album, his typically middle class family was a bit confused. “The only album they had heard about was the photo album so initially they were a little reluctant. I come from a typical middle class family and when a kid like me dreams of becoming a star, all of that seems very far fetched and unrealistic to them. But after This is Bengaluru came out they started believing in me,” he explains.
Rinosh and his cinematographer Bharat, who happens to be his college mate are the men behind the hits, “Bharat was always interested in cinematography so that’s how we did our first song together. We got along really well, so we came up with This is Bengaluru. He has been my DOP (Director Of Photography) for all my projects,” says Rinosh.
Inspite of all the buzz the song has created, Rinosh isn’t satisfied, He says, “I am happy but I am still not satisfied. That thirst is still there, to get more people to know me. I want to give my audience better stuff. It’s amazing as this is something I have dreamt of for a long time and now it’s all happening. I am just half way there.” Rinosh is also proud of the music and film industry in the state. “I think that we make the best of the best films and amazing music. The pool of talent in the industry is just amazing, people like Mohanlal, Mammootty, Jagathi Sreekumar are all irreplaceable.” said Rinosh.
