They’re loud, they’re heavy and they like getting on people’s nerves. Wierd? Who cares? They’re famous anyway, finds Aasha Sriram

The metal scene in India isn’t as happening as you might think, but if you’ve heard metal, you’ve heard Crypted.

This band was a product of four inspired guys who wanted to get together and play some hardcore metal. In 2008, Arvind and Avinash met drummer Vishnu who was 15 then, and together with vocalist Shiva and guitarist Jayaram, Crypted’s legacy began. “I was a new addition to the band. I used to stalk their Facebook page, listen to the artists they listened to and literally knew all their songs. So, when I first met them, I already knew their songs, which impressed them. The audition was real quick, they asked me to play different songs, in different speeds and within couple minutes it was over,” says VG Pranav, Crypted’s lead guitarist.

The original members Arvind and Avinash left the band early on. You’d think that it would have been over for them, but Crypted is more than just a story; it’s a legacy. “There have been many who’ve been part of the band, and they’ve helped mould the band over the years. But, Crypted lives on irrespective of its members,” says Pranav.

Crypted took some time to find its zone, with new members, Pranav, Moiz, and Shiva joining the band. But, with so much going on, Crypted still seems to rock on. “Our drummer, Vishnu is really motivated to create this kind of music for the band that he started. Since he’s one of the founding members, he’s the driving force behind Crypted. Vishnu’s parents have been a huge part of holding Crypted together,” he adds.

Festering with insane energy, Crypted’s music is now the Kryponite to elementary music. They derive inspiration from a plethora of genres including Jazz and fusion. “I don’t remember which our first song was, but it was super loud and heavy. It really pissed people off, and we liked that,” says Pranav.

Along with Vishnu’s other band, Trojan Horse, Crypted set out on an Indian tour to give its audience in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Mumbai a taste of real Metal. “There’s a huge Metal audience in India. Although they aren’t too active, they’ve come for a few shows. They don’t end up supporting the bands through the years. So, bands do have a hard time, but there are quite a few Metal heads in India!” explains Pranav.

This summer, Crypted is releasing its second EP (Extended Play)which will include four tracks. He adds, “We had done an EP in 2010 and right now, we’re releasing our second, which is a four track digital release. We’ll be putting it up sometime this month. We just got the artwork done along with the recording, mixing and mastering. So, that’s something we’re looking forward to.”
