MADURAI: The discontent in Tamil Nadu Congress over seat-sharing deal with ally DMK and choice of candidates came out in the open with TNCC vice-president K S Govindarajan declaring that the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), the party’s trade union, will not support the Congress-DMK alliance in the May 16 election.
Addressing mediapersons here on Thursday, Govindarajan, also a senior INTUC leader, said the union office-bearers are highly disappointed as they have not been given tickets in any of the 41 constituencies where Congress is contesting. “The INTUC has a strength of six lakh workers in Tamil Nadu and it otherwise means, it has with it 20 lakh voters. We are not going to work for the DMK-Congress alliance,” he said.
Alleging that TNCC president EVKS Elangovan and senior Congress leader S Thirunavukkarasu had removed his name from the recommendation list for Madurai North constituency, Govindarajan claimed that the duo were trying to destroy the party for their own gains. ”Elangovan is trying hard to get ticket for newcomer Khushbu, sidelining the senior leaders,” he said. According to him, the next course of action will be decided in INTUC’s general body meeting to be held in Chennai on April 24. He also claimed that some cadre wanted to back the AIADMK in the election.
