From controversy’s favourite child to the most-sought-after bachelor, Silambarasan has come a long way. Despite the adulation surrounding him, he remains one of the few actors who recognize real from reel.
A career graph of any actor reveals not just his bank balance but also his state of mind. And if we had to describe Simbu’s state of mind since he set foot into the industry, the word would be ‘strategic’.
With an incredible amount of thought and passion thrown in, he has been part of some of the highest grossing films (Not just in domestic markets but internationally). Starting off as a child artiste, he later leveraged on his image of a raw young romeo-esque hero in ‘Kaadhal Azhivadhillai’ in 2002. Not one to be cast aside with nasty rumours or link-ups, he strode ahead with unswerving dedication. Many sections of the press wrote him off, and some even credited his popularity to dating ‘popular’ women, yet he remained unhindered, in pursuing his single most important goal — “To be a well respected actor, who will be remembered.”
Then, cut to 2010. ‘Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya’ happened and all of a sudden there was an attitudinal shift towards him. Many who decried his talent years ago, ranked him their favourite hero. Women who claimed to ‘stay away’ from him all of a sudden made overtures to reach out and producers lined up to sign him on.
But even at the peak of adulation he remained spiritual, sensible and aware of his real talents. “I am not moved by success so much. I enjoy it but at the end of the day I am an actor and want to do my job well,” he smiles.
But there is one thing that cracks him up, “After VTV the female attention I get is unmanageable. I love female fans and respect them, but when they all want to fall in love with me, I don’t know how to react.”
So, how does he turn the fairer sex down?
“I stayed away from social networking sites and switched off my cell phone for a long period of time to avoid unnecessary attention. I respect women. I don’t encourage flirting.”
Although his proximity to the powers is evident, he is one of the most grounded, detached and aware actors who is always up to lend his support for a cause. And in particular his admiration for the fraternity is awe-inspiring. In an industry where backbiting and petty quarrels are a norm, Simbu has stayed away from controversy and has a good word for everyone.
“I am so thankful to the Tamil film industry for giving me such a prime space in its family. It is very encouraging for any young hero to be among so many luminaries and still have their own creative space. I look up to Ajith a lot and all my costars and technicians have helped me grow.”
And on his illustrious father T Rajender, “He taught me everything I know yet he never controlled or curtailed my choices. He is my pillar of support and I owe all my success to him and the Tamil audiences.”
Speaking of his upcoming flick ‘Vaanam’, co-starring Anushka, whom he had previously claimed to admire he says, “It is a film that revolves around five characters. Drawing from its name ‘Vaanam’ (sky) the roles we essay are cloudy, sunny and sometimes grey. We have put our heart and soul into this film. Anushka is an amazing co-star who is a thorough professional and is good at her craft.”
So has he ever been a fan of a heroine? “As a child I was a huge fan of Khushboo and later of Jyothika. I was also very fortunate to have acted with Jyothika in two films.”
What about a hottie that he fancies? “Megan Fox looks gorgeous,” he smiles with a look that is so noncommittal.
As we wrap up the interview, it is but evident that this young gun has evolved into a dapper, cultivated dude with his heart and mind in the right place.
