Sunidhi Chauhan delivers another hit with ‘Sheila ki jawani’. The talented singer tells Expresso how she manages to hit the right notes.
She may have more than 60 chartbusters to her credit but singer Sunidhi Chauhan says that even today she treats every song like her first song. Fresh from the success of ‘Sheila ki jawani’, the glamorous crooner says, “I believe in working hard and giving hundred per cent to every song I sing. The excitement level before I start recording any song is the same as what I felt during my first song.” Excerpt from the interview.
Sheila Ki Jawani has become so popular. Did you expect the song to do so well while recording it?
Not really. I thought it’s a good song but never realised that it will become such a huge hit.
There are some objections related to the lyrics of this song. What do you have to say?
I think people are just making a big issue out of it whereas there are bigger issues to deal with. I feel there is nothing offensive about that song as it’s reported.
People have now started calling you Sheila. How does it feel?
I’m enjoying every bit of it. It’s definitely better than me being called 'Bhoot' since I was featured in that video.
What about comparisons between ‘Sheila ki jawani’ and ‘Munni badnam hui’?
People are there to compare. I know both these songs are doing pretty well.
Mamta Sharma, the singer of Munni, is a fresh name in the industry. Do you feel bad that you are being pitted against someone who has just started her career?
It’s not a big deal. Personally, I like listening and dancing to both. I think we should give it to her for doing such a good job.
Do you feel threatened by young talented singers?
Not at all. I think the industry will only get better if we’ve fresh talented singers.
Are you working extra hard to make sure your next song is better than ‘Sheila’?
It’s tough to predict whether the song will become a hit or flop. Even today, I take every song as my first song and work hard to make it work.
Would you like to judge another reality show after Indian Idol?
Why not? Thank God, nothing was made up on that show and that’s the reason why I’d like to do it again. I’d like to host a reality show, if given a chance.
You have sung all kinds of songs. What do you enjoy more?
I’m only selective when it comes to lyrics as I don’t like to do anything vulgar. My choice of songs depends on my mood. As a singer, I like to experiment.
You recently said you share a love-hate relationship with music composer Anu Malik. Tell us something about it.
I think there were issues between us when we were hosting the same show, but I don’t have any personal problem with him. I’d love to work with him again whether it’s a film or television show.
What’s next?
I’m just looking forward to doing some good work in 2011.
