She’s tall, statuesque and pretty and has received many offers to act. But for playback singer and Vijay TV’s Airtel Super Singer 3 anchor, Divya, life is one big soulful melody and she wouldn’t trade places for anything. For someone who studied commerce and human resources, life took many turns before landing her up in showbiz!
“I have always dreamt of being a classical singer,” recalls Divya. “But showbiz was coincidental!” Divya is still passionate about devotional classical music and never once imagined that she would end up as a playback singer. Her first song was Om Namaste for the Telugu film Ready, while Dheem Thanakka Thillaana from Villu catapulted her into the limelight. “I was a student, doing my MA then,” she laughs. To date she has sung for music directors Vijay Anthony, Devi Sriprasad and Yuvan among others. While she does want to sign for Harris Jayaraj soon, her ultimate dream is singing for AR Rahman. “I am just waiting to go to his doorstep and give him a sample of my work. I grew up listening to him. I admire his freshness and his humility and I wish I could be like him!” she exclaims.
So how did TV happen? “I went to Kerala to sing for an amateur programme when they asked me to host a show. Luckily, since I had modeled a bit, I wasn’t camera shy and my mother tongue being Malyalam, I gave it a shot. Then, playback singing happened,” she says. “When I went on a Vijay TV show as a guest singer, the director of the show asked me if I could anchor a show. I refused since I wasn’t sure I could handle the language. But after five months of persuasion, I gave in! The channel’s confidence in me really helped,” she adds.
With shows like Sangeetham and Gandharva in Malyalam under her belt, Divya is happy with her job. Her dream is to buy a slot on a TV channel and direct her own music show, travel the world and collaborate with world musicians.
