They belong to the league of ideal daughters-in-law, much loved and admired by their daily audience. But all these lead ladies are parts of official remakes, reprising some already-popular characters. We take a look at the Hindi originals and the stars who raised the ratings of their respective shows.
We all know Lakshmi in Pranayam, a remake of hit soap ‘Yeh Hai Mohabbatein’. It’s Divyanka Tripathi who plays the female lead in the original as Dr Ishita, the kindhearted dentist who marries her divorced neighbour. Star Plus started telecasting it in 2013 and the show claimed one of the top slots within months. Filled to the brim with drama, Yeh Hai Mohabbatein has remained an ever-popular soap so far and had won a string of popular small screen awards. Divyanka, who hails from Bhopal, was much appreciated for her portrayal of a South Indian girl who marries into a loud Punjabi family. Now the show has taken a seven-year leap and the new storyline unfolds in Australia.
Saath Nibhaana Saathiya had a surefire thread - an orphan girl who marries into a wealthy Gujarati household. No wonder the show was equally popular when it was remade into Malayalam as Chandanamazha. Devoleena Bhattacharjee, who plays the main protagonist Gopi, had to step into the shoes of Giaa Manek and replace her when the latter decided to quit the show. Four years and two leaps later Devoleena is still going strong keeping the show in a safe position. Meghna Vincent reprises her role in Malayalam and Chandanamazha is slightly tweaked to suit local sensibilities.
Another show that boasts of a handful of regional remakes, Diya Aur Baati Hum is woven around a conservative Rajasthani joint family. Deepthi IPS, who wooed your heart through Parasparam is reprising the role of Deepika Singh, who plays Sandhya in the original. Her character, a sweet and ambitious young girl who aspires to be an IPS officer, could easily strike a chord with the audience and has a solid fan base. Gaythri Arun shot to fame after essaying the role in Malayalam and in both the languages the show could keep a high rating.
